Our Mission in Thatcham.
As well as services on Sundays, we extend our mission in Thatcham on a Tuesday morning with our Coffee Break in the British School. We have several regular attenders who come weekly to have a cup of coffee and meet up with friends for a chat, as well as those who pop in now and again. Biscuits (and occasionally other home-made treats) are also available! The Minister also usually attends and is available to talk to anybody who wishes.
Twice a month a short informal service follows Coffee Break. This is an important part of our outreach in Thatcham as it often attracts those who do not wish to attend a full service on a Sunday, or who are new to the area or to church.
For the younger members of the Thatcham Community, a Messy Church session runs each school holiday. Children up to the age of 11, along with their parents or carers come along for a morning of Bible based activities, a snack and a drink, finishing off with a short service in the church. This is an important way of introducing younger members of the community to church, along with their parents or carers.
Our Mission in the World
After Coffee Break twice a month a group of ladies come together to “Knit and Natter”. As well as providing another friendly outreach for the church, the group has produced garments and blankets for overseas charities for many years. Thus our local mission reaches out further into the world.
As a church, we also support Commitment for Life – a wider URC mission. We have chosen to support Bangladesh as our country, and a retiring collection is held at the end of the third Sunday in the month to make up our contribution. Proceeds from Harvest lunches and sales are also donated to Commitment for Life.
